About
How Daisies and Dahlias Grew
Saratoga Springs native, Rachelle Thomas, began Daisies and Dahlias in 2016 soon after she graduated from Skidmore College. She wanted a job she could enjoy and also fit her daughter’s school schedule. A young hardworking woman, Thomas began by gardening for a few residential clients out of her sedan as the business began to grow naturally through word of mouth. As more and more clients continued to seek out her design and plant skills, Thomas added additional employees, vehicles, and equipment to keep pace with the increasing workload. Now Daisies and Dahlias helps homeowners and businesses all over the Capital Region create beautiful plant spaces they’ll enjoy for years to come.
Thomas’ love of plants began as a student at SUNY Adirondack, where she took botany and worked in the greenhouses and gardens. There, she learned about plant care and gained more experience with veggie gardening. She transferred to Skidmore and completed her Bachelors in Health and Exercise Science in 2015, before combining her lifelong love of art and nature to begin her career as a gardener. Through hands-on experience, Thomas has learned which plants thrive in our unique upstate NY climate and how to properly care for gardens. She also took the Cornell Master Gardener Program training course in 2018 to deepen her knowledge of plant care and invasive species control.
A true entrepreneur, Thomas has managed almost all aspects of the business since the beginning including client relations, plant designs and installations, scheduling, social media, bookkeeping and even making this website! So you’re guaranteed to get a personalized approach in all our projects, no matter the size or budget.
It’s a lot of work running a business and taking care of so many gardens! Gratefully, Daisies and Dahlias has a hardworking crew that works efficiently, using the proper gardening techniques to get the job done right. We avoid using chemicals and heavy machinery to limit the environmental impact of our work as much as possible.
One day, Thomas looks forward to having a storefront and growing all of her own flowers for the business. For now however, Daisies and Dahlias is a traveling gardening service that sources plants from local greenhouses, including Dehn’s Flowers, Sunnyside Gardens, Bob’s Trees, and Olde Saratoga Farms. We trust them to have plants that will thrive in our growing zone, and enjoy working with them since they all grow such beautiful flowers.
